The painter Hassan Haddad was born in Balad, Iraq in 1962. From 1980 to 1986 he studied graphic design and painting at the Baghdad Academy of Fine Arts. In those days, the Academy was modern, structured in line with western standards, and with leanings towards Europe, France, Great Britain, and the USA. 

For the last ten years, Hassan Haddad has lived and worked in Leipzig. His paintings can be described as graphic on the one hand and as photographic and inspired by film on the other. This is not only perceptible in their quasi photographic structure, but also in the fact that his paintings often seem like film sequences or filmed still lifes. Photography is so important to Hassan Haddad that he integrates his camera into his paintings at times. However, this does not mean that he sees his work as photorealistic or as based on his photographs. On the contrary, he believes that his photography should be seen as his sketchbook, his collection of material that safeguards and records certain details. Another unusual aspect is that Haddad employs various printing-technology elements in his painting technique. 

In other paintings, Hassan Haddad uses characteristic western European imagery to create human lives in harmony with each other and with nature. In those paintings he encapsulates concepts such as ‘romantic’ or ‘idyllic’ - at times critically and at others ironically. 

Hassan Haddad is a modern-day painter with his origins in a culture and history that contrasts with European culture and history, who lives and works in a European country. He shares his problems and connects with them, and that produces material and offers inspiration for his work.

De schilder Hassan Haddad werd geboren in Balad, Irak in 1962. Zijn opleiding volgde hij van 1980 tot 1986 in Bagdad aan de Academy of Fine Arts in de vakken grafisch design en schilderkunst. Deze school was toentertijd een moderne, naar westerse maatstaven gestructureerde opleiding met een oriëntatie naar Europa, in het bijzonder Frankrijk en Groot-Brittanië, evenals naar de USA. 

Sinds ongeveer tien jaar leeft en werkt hij in Leipzig. Zijn schilderijen zijn te omschrijven als enerzijds grafisch van aard en anderzijds fotografisch en geïnspireerd op films. Dat is niet alleen herkenbaar door de quasi fotografische structuur, maar ook doordat zijn schilderijen zich dikwijls voordoen alsof het filmreeksen of filmstillevens zijn. De fotografie is voor Haddad zo belangrijk dat hij af en toe zijn fototoestel in zijn schilderijen integreert. Dat betekent echter niet dat hij zijn werk als fotorealistisch ziet en foto’s daarvoor als basis neemt. Integendeel, fotograferen mag voor hem wel beschouwd worden als zijn werk met zijn schetsboek, zijn verzameling van materiaal waarmee bepaalde details verzekerd zijn. Ongewoonlijk is ook dat Haddad in zijn schilderkunst ook verscheidene technische elementen van de druktechniek inzet. 

In andere schilderijen houdt Hassan Haddad met kenmerkende West-Europese voorstellingen het mensenleven in harmonie met elkaar en met de natuur. Hij grijpt in zijn schilderijen naar begrippen als ‘romantiek’ en ‘idylle’, de ene keer kritisch en soms ook ironisch. 

Hassan Haddad is een hedendaagse schilder, stammend uit een cultuur en geschiedenis tegenovergesteld aan de Europese, levend en werkend in een Europees land. Zijn problemen deelt en er zich mee identificeert, dat hem stof en materiaal voor zijn schilderijen levert.
